Immigration

As conversations around immigration continue in our community and beyond, Visalia Unified is guided by both educational code, state law, and board policy which prohibits us from collecting any information related to a student or family’s immigration status. We want to reassure you that, by law, every child has the right to a public education regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents. It's important to know that VUSD is guided by both educational code, state law, and board policy which prohibits us from collecting any information related to a student or family’s immigration status. Our schools will continue to be a safe place where students come to learn and be supported.

VUSD's Response:

At VUSD, our approach has been personal and proactive. For several weeks, those staff best positioned to support families beyond the classroom (e.g. principals, counselors, social workers, and other school staff) have been provided guidance and resources to help families navigate concerns. These conversations are taking place in spaces with the people our families know and trust, and this approach is working. Our overall attendance in January 2025 is better than that in January 2024, and we see students in our Newcomer program attending school at a rate equal to that of our overall student population – a sign that they feel safe and welcomed at school. While our focus remains in the classroom, we are uniquely positioned to provide resources to families who may need additional support.
